India’s opener Smriti Mandhana has set a unique record by scoring 91 runs against the West Indies in the first ODI in Vadodara on Sunday.
With the innings, Mandhana took her tally to 1,602 runs across three formats in 2024, breaking the all-time record for most international runs in a calendar year. She reached the milestone in 36 matches, with her highest score in 2024 being 149 against South Africa in the only Test in Chennai in June.
In India’s recently concluded T20I series win against the West Indies, she also held the record for most runs in a calendar year in a women’s T20I, scoring 763 runs in 2024. She also broke the record for most 50+ scores in women’s T20I cricket. Series decider on Thursday.
Mandhana surpassed South Africa’s Laura Wolvaard, who ended her year with 1,593 runs. The southpaw has yet to play two more ODIs against the West Indies this year. The 28-year-old claimed the record in 2018 before losing to Nate Sciver Brunt in 2022.
Batting earlier on Sunday, India scored 314-9 runs in the first innings. It was not only Mandhana’s but the team’s contribution to cross the 300 mark, with solid scores from Harmanpreet Kaur (34 off 23 balls), Harleen Deol (44 off 50 balls), Richa Ghosh (26 off 12 balls) and Jemimah Rodrigues (31). 19 off 19) Kaur (34 off 23 balls), Harleen Deol (44 off 50 balls), Richa Ghosh (26 off 12 balls) and Jemimah Rodrigues (31 off 19 balls).
