The State Highways Department has started demolishing the buildings acquired for the construction of the overbridge at the level crossing at Devdhanam on Kaveri Road near the town railway station in Tiruchi.

A few months ago, the department called for tenders to implement the project, which was stalled due to the delay in land acquisition. According to department sources, the tender is in the final stage of approval.

About 5,612 square meters of private land was acquired for the construction of the flyover. The process of land acquisition was completed except for one land. Sources said that the revenue department is distributing the compensation to other landowners.

The department has now started demolishing the concrete structures on the occupied land. It is said that this process will continue for the next few days.

An overbridge at the level crossing between Srirangam and Town railway stations on the Tiruchi-Chennai chord line was approved in August 2022. The flyover will be constructed by the highways department and the railways on an equal cost sharing basis. The state government had given administrative approval for its construction at a cost of Rs 23.45 billion.

The level crossing is located on Kaveri Road branching from Odathurai Road on the south bank of Kaveri and connects with Eastern Boulevard Road leading to Gandhi Market/Thanjavur Road in the city. Passengers were facing a lot of inconvenience as the railway gate of the busy section was frequently closed.

Odathurai Road leads to Chathiram Bus Stand and Kaveri Bridge on one side and Tiruchi-Chennai Bypass on the other. Both rail and road traffic is heavy on the section.
