The ferry, carrying more than 100 passengers, was heading from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist spot with a collection of ancient caves.

According to documents released by the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), the boat was permitted to carry 84 passengers and six crew members, but it was overloaded, a police official said. The MMB, which is investigating the accident, has revoked the license of the ferry because the vessel was overloaded and violated the Inland Vessel Act. An official said the boat has a capacity of 90 people.

A case has been registered against the navy craft driver at the Colaba police station, the official said.

Indian Penal Code (BNS) sections invoked in the FIR include acts causing death by negligence, endangering personal safety or life of others, rash or negligent navigation of a vessel, and mischievous acts causing wrongful harm or damage. person or people.

The ship affected by the accident is in the custody of the Navy, and the police will demand an investigation if necessary, the official said.
