TN wants to get 50 percent of its power from renewable energy sources

Chennai:Under the direction of Chief Minister MK Stalin, the province will be far ahead of the target of producing 50 percent electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030 and 43 percent from renewable energy sources set by the central government.

An official release states that the state is working to increase electricity production from renewable energy sources along with traditional sources and provide electricity at the lowest rates to industries that employ youth.

With the steps taken by the government, the state will take care of all its needs and become self-sufficient in power generation and also stand at the top in the use of renewable energy sources for power generation.

This province, which has been at the forefront of generating electricity from wind energy since 1986, currently ranks second in the country by generating 11,000 megawatts of electricity, while its capacity to generate electricity from solar energy is third.

By 2030, an additional 100 billion units of electricity will be generated from solar and wind energy sources, apart from renewable energy sources such as pumped storage projects, battery energy storage systems and bio-mass co-gen, the statement said.
