Belagavi: Last year, 127 children died in Yadgir district due to various causes, Gurumitkal JD(S) MLA Sharangowda Kandakur said on Monday.
Highlighting the plight of his district, he said that all those who lost their lives were poor because the rich could afford treatment in corporate hospitals.
“In the last one year, 127 children have died in Yadgir. All of them were from poor families and were being treated in government hospitals,” the JD(S) MLA said during a discussion in the North Karnataka Assembly.
Kandkur said the health infrastructure in the Kalyan Karnataka region had been “destroyed” and five mothers had died in Ballari district.
According to him, there have been 2,079 maternal deaths in the province in three years.
Allam Prabhu Patil, Congress MLA from Gulbarga, drew the government’s attention to the polluted water flowing in the Bhima river as water from its tributary Sina river was diverted to Maharashtra.
“We are not getting a single drop of Sina river water in Bhima river. Only waste water is dumped in Bhima. We are spreading many waterborne diseases. Why is the government not complaining to the Central Water Commission about this,” asked Patil. .
He asked the government to construct at least four big lakes to meet the drinking water needs of district headquarters Kalburgi Nagar.
The Gulbarga MLA requested the government to award school uniform contracts to the traditional weavers of the state to sustain their business.
Another Congress MLA, Srinivasa Mane, highlighted the poor bus services affecting the education of economically weaker section girls in his constituency Hanagal.
“In the absence of proper transport facilities, girls either attend their classes late or fail to reach school,” the MLA said.
All the MLAs who spoke were unanimous that there should be more industries in the North Karnataka region to address the unemployment issue.
