Voice actors deserve recognition and royalties for their work

The Hindi version of Pushpa 2 is breaking box office records, and Shreyas Talpade, voiced by Allu Arjun in the film, is overwhelmed with gratitude. “I feel overwhelmed and grateful for the love that people have given me, where every single person is saying that I and my voice are equally responsible for the success, it feels really great,” he says.

As a dubbing artiste, Talpade’s work is often neglected, but he believes it is time for a change. “I think in India, we should also have a performance-based royalty system, where a certain portion of the royalty should go to the voice actors’ association,” he suggests.

Talpade emphasizes the importance of recognizing the hard work done by the voice actors to make the film a success. “The amount of work these people, every voice actor put in is incredible. And most of the time their work is not credited, it’s unnecessary, even though they play a huge role in making the film a success,” says Shreyas.

He proposes that the royalties should go to the Voice Actors’ Association, which can distribute them to those involved in the project. “I think the Sangh should get some royalty just like the Sangeet Sangha and the Singer Sangha get royalties. And then that association can give a portion of that royalty to the people responsible for dubbing that particular film, not just one or two actors, but everyone involved in that particular film and project. It happens in international countries. I wonder why this is not happening here. It’s time we have a performance-based royalty system, in which the royalties go to the voice artists’ association,” he signed off.
