New Delhi: Opposition MPs staged a protest at Delhi’s Vijay Chowk on Friday demanding an apology and resignation from Home Minister Amit Shah for allegedly “insulting” BR Ambedkar. They also took out a rally from Vijay Chowk to Parliament.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also criticized the BJP over the FIR filed against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha, saying it “shows the level of their frustration”.
“The whole country is watching, they have slapped many cases on Rahul Gandhi. They bring new FIRs and lie… it shows their level of desperation,” she told reporters.
Priyanka Gandhi joined several other Indian Bloc MPs at Vijay Chowk to protest Shah’s comments and demanded Shah’s apology and resignation over the matter.
She was carrying a placard that read ‘Babasahab Ka Sharm Nahi Sahega Hindustan’.
The MPs raised slogans like ‘Jai Bhim’, ‘Amit Shah apologize’, ‘Istifa do’.
The protest comes a day after BJP MPs Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput were injured after opposition and ruling MPs clashed in Parliament premises over alleged insults to Ambedkar.
The BJP has accused Rahul Gandhi of pushing a senior member, a charge the Congress leader has denied.
The opposition on Wednesday seized on Shah’s comments about Ambedkar to besiege the government and demanded his resignation, calling it an insult to the architect of the Constitution.
