The Supreme Court on Tuesday, November 20, 2024, upheld the Madras High Court’s order directing the CBI to investigate the Kallakurichi hooch accident that killed 68 people.
A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and J Mahadevan said, “After hearing the learned Advocate General appearing for the petitioners and perusing the material on record, we would interfere with the very reasoned decision of the High Court. We do not see any good reason,” said a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and J Mahadevan. Dismissing the special leave petition filed by the state’s ruling DMK government.
Leaving the probe to the CBI, the high court expressed concern over the government’s handling of the case and questioned the police’s ability to conduct a fair and impartial investigation.
The tragedies that unfolded in June and July exposed a systemic failure. The High Court highlighted glaring weaknesses in governance and expressed dismay at the reinstatement of suspended police officers, including former Kallakurichi Superintendent of Police (SP) Samya Singh Meena.
