The Yerwada Central Jail on Tuesday got a much-needed security upgrade, with the inauguration and commissioning of a panic alarm system, including a silent alarm. The security upgrade also includes a turnstile gate with biometric access and a centralized control mechanism, officials said.
The latest upgrade will go a long way in helping jail staff navigate the challenges posed by overcrowding at Yerwada Central Jail.
As part of the upgrade of security mechanisms in central jails across the state by prisons department officials, Yerwada Central Jail received several additions, which were fitted by a Gurugram-based security system firm.
“The main addition to this upgrade is a multi-function panic alarm system. It includes an alarm system for emergency quick response to any situation that arises in the prison, which increases safety and security concerns for inmates and staff. One element is the panic button for staff and the other A panic button for inmates. It has separate functionality for medical emergencies. A unique feature is a silent covert alarm, with which staff can be mobilized without raising signals that inmates can hear,” a prison department official said. said
Another key element of the upgrade is the turnstile gates with biometric access. “The access controlled turnstile gate will play a key role in ensuring that only authorized personnel and visitors are granted entry. It will also keep track of entry and exit. Access control is given to a centralized security system, entry and exit can be restricted if required,” the official added.
Officials said the overcrowding posed a major challenge to maintaining segregation and physical isolation among feared criminals, especially organized rival gangs. Yerwada Central Jail has 6,800 inmates against a capacity of 2,700, making it the most densely populated jail in the state.
