JP Nadda’s Lecture on Constitution, ‘Attempt to Kill Democracy’

Referring to Article 370, which was abrogated in 2019, the BJP president blamed former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the Congress for bringing it in the first place.

JP Nadda speaks in the Rajya Sabha during the winter session of Parliament in New Delhi on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.

Even a good constitution can turn out to be bad if those implementing it are not good, Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha JP Nadda said on Tuesday, asserting that the “bad side” has interfered with the Indian Constitution many times. Participating in the discussion on “75 years of the glorious journey of the Constitution of India”, Nadda also raised the issue of Emergency, amendments to the Preamble of the Constitution and Article 370.

He said that the nation is indebted to the members of the Constituent Assembly who drafted the constitution. “As the Prime Minister said, India is not only the largest democracy, but the mother of democracy. The framers of our constitution knew that it is not a nation in the making, it has always been a nation,” Nadda said. BJP president.

“According to Indian democracy, democracy includes freedom, acceptance, equality, inclusiveness and allowing citizens to lead dignified lives,” he said. The BJP leader quoted BR Ambedkar as saying, “No matter how good a constitution is, if those who implement it are not good, it will prove to be bad”. He also said that “evil has often interfered with the constitution”.

Referring to Article 370, which was abrogated in 2019, the BJP president blamed former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the Congress for bringing it in the first place. Ambedkar had opposed the provision of Article 370, while Article 35A was brought in with the President’s assent without debate in Parliament, Nadda said.

“I am proud to say, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee raised the issue of Article 370 and sacrificed his life for it…His mother wrote to Nehruji and demanded an inquiry. But that request was ignored and this is also registered in the pages of history,” he asserted. did

“It’s a question of good and bad,” Nadda said. “After a lot of bad, we got a lot of good. On August 5, 2019, we abrogated Article 370… I once again congratulate the Prime Minister. Because of his wisdom, Jammu and Kashmir is now an integral part of India.”

He also said that Congress leaders are saying they have apologized for the Emergency, but “how can we believe it”? Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the crisis, he reminded the House, adding, “We will celebrate Anti-Democracy Day. We invite the Indian National Congress to join us.”

“There was an attempt to kill democracy…if they have any remorse in their hearts, I invite you to join us on June 25, 2025,” Nadda said. The government declared June 25 as “Constitution Assassination Day” in 1975, the day the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency.

Nadda also claimed that Ambedkar had said during the Constituent Assembly debate that there was no need to include the words ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ in the Preamble of the Constitution. “Ambedkar said that there was no need to include ‘secular’, as the entire Constitution embodied the concept of a secular state which meant no discrimination on the basis of religion and equal rights and status of all citizens,” he said.

“By including the word socialist, he said it goes against the grain of democracy for the people of India to decide what kind of society they want to live in,” Nadda added.
