Visakhapatnam: In a significant achievement, the first-ever calf was born by embryo transfer (ET) — at coastal Vizianagaram in Ramabhadrapuram mandal of Jagannadhapuram-Arikathota region.
Dr. Suresh, an experienced physician from Arikathota, performed the procedure on 9th of Chait. A healthy female calf was born on December 15 from an embryo named G-208 BL 7-1.
This milestone is a significant achievement in the field’s veterinary science and animal husbandry efforts. Two veterinarians in the district have been trained in the ET/IVF procedure. This is as part of an effort to further explore this technology.
The goal is to produce more calves with high genetic merit while increasing the quality and productivity of livestock in the region.
Joint Director Animal Husbandry Dr YV Ramana told Deccan Chronicle, “Under the IVF ET programme, embryos of all the most sought-after breeds are available. At the National Kamadenu Breeding Center and Chinthaladevi, more emphasis is placed on indigenous breeding to encourage the cultivation of indigenous breeds and population of indigenous breeds.
GIR, Sahiwal and Ongole embryos are being produced under this process. Sex-sorted semen is used to produce embryos of the Gir and Sahiwal breeds.
This success story highlights the potential of advanced breeding technologies to improve livestock breeding and contribute to the agricultural economy. The local veterinary community is optimistic about the potential of ET/IVF in the region.
