Five people were arrested on Sunday in connection with the December 13 abduction and gang-rape of a minor girl in South Tripura district, police said, adding that they were produced in court on Monday.
According to the complaint filed by the girl’s mother, she was taken to a rubber plantation by two people from near her home, where three others gang-raped her. They dropped the girl at home late at night.
“We arrested five accused on Sunday. They have been booked under Section 6 of the Kidnapping, Gang-Rape and POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses) Act,” said a police official.
Police sources said that when the accused were produced before a local court on Sunday, lawyers for two of them claimed that they were minors and provided the necessary documents. However, after the police gave two days to verify the documents, the court ordered them to be submitted again on Monday.
A few days ago, a girl was kidnapped and gang-raped in Unakoti district. Two people have been arrested in the incident.
In two separate incidents in September, two minor girls were raped in Khowai district and the police arrested two people in the incident. In August, two persons were arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in South Tripura district.
