A man was arrested on Saturday in connection with the severed head of a woman found in a garbage dump in South Kolkata’s Tollyganj area, police said.
Police said that the arrested person is the brother-in-law of the deceased woman. The police said that the accused had a relationship with the deceased and divorced her husband two years ago.
Police said they arrested the man from his village in South 24 Parganas district. During interrogation, he admitted to killing the woman.
A woman’s severed head wrapped in plastic was found in a garbage dump behind a multi-storey apartment in South Kolkata’s Gulf Green area on Friday morning. Police said the body was found in Regent’s Park on Saturday.
After receiving the news, a police team along with Kolkata police dogs reached the spot. Several other body parts are still missing, an official said.
“Our priority is to find the remaining body parts and find out the real reason behind the murder,” the official said. CCTV footage of the entire area will be scanned to find out if any vehicle was used to dispose of the body parts, the official said.
“The accused first strangled the woman aged 35-40 years and then killed her with a sharp weapon. Investigation is being done to see if others are involved or not,’ he said.
He said that the complications in the relationship between the woman and the siblings may have led to the murder. The discovery of the severed head shocked the middle-class neighborhood in the city’s south.
