He said that the Modi government is constantly trying to erase the distinction between the party and the state by weakening and usurping all mechanisms for seeking executive accountability. “It’s cutting our constitution by thousands,” she said.
“The first test democracy seeks is electoral accountability from the political executive. Measures like electoral manipulation, voter boycott, partisan campaign finance give unfair advantage to the ruling party over time. Voter boycott has reached epic proportions in India,” Mahua said, referring to past general elections and recent by-elections in BJP-ruled states.
‘The police used to threaten, beat and intimidate the voters. We saw it in Rampur, we saw it in Sambhal, entire areas were forced to stay at home,” she said.
