Pune: As Christmas approaches, festive bazaars are planned, carol singers spread cheer Pune News

‘Tis the season! Christmas is around the corner, time to celebrate, experience the joy of the day, and have fun with loved ones. A number of events are planned for this weekend as churches and private clubs hold their annual Christmas bazaar as carol singers from around the various parishes go from door to door singing cheerful yuletide tunes.

The popular Silver Bells choir will present an evening of Christmas carols on December 15 at Gulati Hall, St Vincent’s School. Afterwards, the choir of St. Xavier’s Church will visit the areas under their parish and sing carols to get into the festive spirit.

At John Paul II Church in Wakad, parish priest Father Stanley Fernandes said their groups will visit homes in parishes and sing carols with families. “This is a unique initiative by us as we will reach Hinjewadi Phase 1 and 2, Balewadi, Gahunje and other areas.”

In parishes, carol singing serves not only as a festive tradition but also as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.

Ryan Fernandes, 28, youth president of St. Francis Xavier Church, Chinchwad, says: “For me Christmas carols are about spreading the message of hope, peace and salvation that the birth of Jesus brought to mankind. It is a form of singing that explains the birth scene of Jesus.”

‘The best time of the year’

Keith Sims, 29, former president of OLCA Youth, Our Lady Consoler of Pimpri, shared similar sentiments.

“Carol singing for me is the most wonderful time of the year, where all the family and friends gather around to announce his birth. It gives joy and hope,” he said.

The youth of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Pune, led by Shayren Almeida, have also taken a traditional approach to carols, leaving out modern elements like Santa Claus and snowmen. “It’s our focus to spread the message of Christmas – love, hope, peace and joy – in a fun and joyful way,” Sheren said.

Goodies for showing off at private clubs

Meanwhile, Christmas bazaars are also being planned, showcasing fun goodies in private clubs and churches. The Jingle Bells Christmas Bazaar on December 15, curated by Noella Kamble, provides a platform for small entrepreneurs to showcase their creations. “We have 75 stalls displaying a variety of items, Christmas themed linens, wine, cakes and more,” said Kambli.

Tambola, run by Ministry of Prisons India, will also provide participants with an opportunity to win cash prizes, he said. Kambli emphasizes her commitment to giving back to the community. “I support NGOs under my banner to ensure that the spirit of sharing and caring remains alive,” she explains.

The Poona Goan Institute has organized a Christmas Jamboree on December 21 and decorative and handicraft items will be on display. Anil D’Souza of PGI said, “Apart from stalls offering readings and Christmas sweets, games and other events are also planned.”
