An interior designer from Mumbai lost his left arm when a 64-tonne crane fell on a bridge between Ghatkopar and Vikhroli on Saturday morning.
The victim has been identified as 44-year-old Vipul Panchal of Adarsh Nagar Kandivali. The accident happened while he was returning home from work.
While being taken to the construction site, the crane fell from the trailer. The crane fell on Panchal’s motorcycle and was seriously injured. The driver of the trailer that hit is Lalta Prasad Yadav.
Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) officials said the weight of the crane made it challenging to remove, and the process would take time to complete. “The crane is extremely heavy, and lifting it requires careful coordination. Traffic on the bridge has been blocked until the crane is removed,” an MFB official said.
The victim was initially taken to Sion Hospital for treatment but was later shifted to a private hospital on the request of his family.
An FIR has been registered at Vikhroli police station against the driver and owner of the trailer. Police Senior Inspector Suryakant Nayakwadi said, ‘We immediately sent a team after receiving information about the incident at 4:30 am. The victim has been taken to hospital, and efforts are underway to remove the crane from the road.”
As the vehicles have been diverted to an alternative route through the service road, there has been a major problem in the traffic on that route. Officials are investigating the incident to find out whether there was a lapse in safety measures during the transport of the crane.
