More than three months after he was found guilty of violating the ‘Tankhaiya’ or Sikh religious code of conduct, former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal completed his ‘penance’ and offered pooja at Sri Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar on Friday.
Badal and other Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders were ordered to do guard duty, clean toilets, serve in community kitchens, perform Nitnem or daily Sikh prayers and be sent to Sukhmani Sahib as punishment for “mistakes”. was given From 2007 to 2017 by their Govt.
After being declared guilty, Badal withdrew from the public eye and resigned as SAD president. The SAD had also refused to contest the assembly by-elections in Punjab last month. All eyes are now on whether the SAD working committee, which is considered loyal to him, will accept his resignation or not.
On Friday, other SAD leaders also reached Sri Akal Takht Sahib after completing their 10-day religious punishment. “We have completed our service following the instructions given by Shri Akal Takht Sahib. I express my gratitude to all the leadership for enthusiastically contributing to the service,” said SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema.
Badal has not given any response.
Earlier, Shiromani Gurdwara Management Committee President Harjinder Singh Dhami, who was in charge of the committee formed for the reorganization of SAD, had himself questioned the directives of Shri Akal Takht Sahib. “There are some technical issues… I have also discussed with other members. The arrangement is there. There are Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines for recognized parties. We have already brought to the notice of Shri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar that they should also check the legal aspects. ,” Dhami said.
