South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol narrowly avoided an impeachment motion after ruling party lawmakers boycotted the opposition-led parliament on Saturday.
The proposal was triggered by his brief attempt to impose martial law earlier this week.
The impeachment of Yun required the support of two-thirds of the National Assembly, which had 200 of its 300 members. Although the opposition party, which brought the impeachment motion, won 192 seats, only three MPs of the PPP participated in the voting.
“The number of members who voted with a total of 195 votes did not reach the required two-thirds majority of the total members. Therefore, I declare that the vote on this matter is not valid,” declared National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik.
This is a breaking news.
