Understanding transmasculine non-binary identities

Gender identity expert Dr Ashutosh Tiwari said, “Transmasculine non-binary individuals identify partially as male and outside or in between the gender assigned at birth. They often present masculinity characteristics but do not fully adhere to male gender identity.” It is important to understand that gender identity and assigned gender are separate entities. For non-binary individuals, these can be mismatched, often resulting in Gender dysphoriaAn emotional crisis. As transmasculine non-binary people often present “masculine” characteristics, according to Dr Tiwari “it is important to respect their complex, individual identities and life experiences.” This is because many people experience this social, personal, medical, and psychological transition in highly unique, individual ways.

Unfortunately, non-binary people often face stigma and discrimination. Dr Tiwari points out, “Such experiences can have a negative impact on mental health and increase the prevalence of suicidal thoughts and tendencies, depression and anxiety.”
