Border Gavaskar Trophy: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said Mohammad Siraj’s departure was ‘inevitable’ after he dismissed centurion Travis Head at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday.
After Siraj hit a four and a six in that over, Border called for a yorker to end Head’s brilliant 141-ball 140 on the second day of the second Test of the Gavaskar Trophy. Then Siraj and Head exchanged glances and words.
“Unnecessary, if you ask me, the man has got 140, he hasn’t got four or five or anything. He brings 140, you are sending him off, it’s totally unacceptable,” Gavaskar said on the tea-time show on Star Sports. “No wonder he took the stick from the crowd. Travis Head is a local hero and after scoring 100, Siraj would have been a hero to the entire crowd if he had even clapped. Instead of letting him go, he’s turned into a villain. “

Siraj was booed by the Adelaide Oval crowd over the last few deliveries. He was also involved in a mini-bust-up with Marnus Labuschagne on day one, throwing the ball to him after the batter pulled late due to obstruction behind the sight screen.
The head was also lucky. One of his edges flew between the wicketkeeper and first slip and on another occasion Siraj couldn’t hold on to a tough catch from Ashwin on the top edge. Head took a single from Ashwin to bring up his century before gesturing to his wife, daughter and newborn son in the stands. He also celebrated by placing his helmet on top of his bat handle, a gesture seen as a tribute to Phil Hughes, who died 10 years ago.
