A railway worker was crushed to death while driving a train coach

Rao was killed on the spot by the running engine.

New Delhi:

Police said a railway porter died during a shunting operation at Barauni Junction in Begusarai, Bihar on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Amar Kumar Rao, a porter working at the station under Sonpur Railway Division.

Mr. Rao died while performing his duty at platform 5 of Barauni Junction when the Lucknow-Barauni Express (No: 15204) arrived from Lucknow Junction. According to railway sources, the accident occurred when Rao was trying to open the coupling of the train. The train unexpectedly reversed, trapping him between the carriages.

After onlookers raised the alarm, the train driver allegedly got out of the train and fled the scene, failing to reverse the engine or take any action to prevent the accident. Rao was killed on the spot by the running engine.

Scenes from the scene show Mr. Rao trapped between two coaches as bystanders snap photos on their mobile phones.

The railway administration has started an investigation into the incident.
