Girl raped: Accused arrested from Jhargram Kolkata News

Days after a seven-month-old girl was raped in North Kolkata, police arrested the prime suspect from Gopiballabpur police station area in Jhargram district on Thursday morning.

Based on the evidence obtained from the CCTV footage in the area, the police arrested one Rajiv Ghosh and took him to Kolkata.

“During the investigation, we have collected circumstantial evidence of utmost importance. Also, we have thoroughly examined the CCTV footage of the road. Based on the CCTV footage, the person has been identified as Rajiv Ghosh. He has already been brought to Kolkata and needs to be taken into custody and interrogated to know who else is involved in the incident,” said an official.

The police said that in addition to investigating the possibility of involvement of other people in this heinous act, the accused is being further investigated and interrogated.

The incident took place on November 30 and came to light after local residents saw an injured infant crying on the pavement and informed the police authorities.

The child was rushed to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors confirmed that the infant had sustained serious injuries.

The child’s mother filed a complaint and a case was registered under stringent sections of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. Following the complaint, the detective department of the Kolkata Police has started a detailed investigation in collaboration with the local police.

“On 30/11/24 at around 01:45 hours, a local resident informed the police that a child was crying on the footpath. Accordingly, the local police reached the spot and found a minor child in front of the premises. Meanwhile, two sidewalk residents reported their 7-month-old girl missing to local police. They identified the minor as their daughter. They were taken to RG Kar Hospital for treatment. After examination and treatment, the doctor said that the minor was injured. Hence, specific case through Burtala PS Case No. 191 dt 30.11.2024 137(2) (kidnapping, 65(2) (rape) BNS Section 6 POCSO Act,” an official added.
