Police in Punjab’s Rupnagar have arrested a man for allegedly killing 11 people in the past 18 months, officials said on Tuesday (Dec 24, 2024).
The accused, identified as Ram Saroop alias Sodhi of Chaura village in Hoshiarpur district, was arrested on Monday in another case and during interrogation it came to light that he was a “serial killer”, they said.
The police said that there were men who would rob him by giving him a lift in his car and kill him if he resisted.
Rupnagar Senior Superintendent of Police Gulneetsinh Khurana said that the police have been instructed to solve the cases of heinous crimes in the district.
Khurana said that a police team has been formed to arrest the culprits involved in the murder.
Referring to a murder incident in Kiratpur Sahib, he revealed that a 37-year-old man serving teapot at Toll Plaza Modra was murdered on August 18.
According to the police, Ram Saroop was arrested during the investigation of this incident and later during interrogation, his involvement in other incidents was revealed.
Police said that the victim was a man who gave him a lift in his car. Later they used to rob and if they protested, they would kill them.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to 10 other murders apart from this case, officials said.
The accused confessed to the killings in Fatehgarh Sahib and Hoshiarpur districts, they said.
According to the police, he used to strangle the victims and in some cases used objects like bricks to commit the crime.
