Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Saturday (December 21, 2024) that the police in the northeastern states should change their orientation and, instead of focusing only on fighting insurgency, should ensure every citizen’s constitutional rights to property, dignity and family. Protection.
“For years, the focus of the police in all states was only against insurgency and violence. However, now that the violence in the Northeast has almost stopped, the time has come to ensure their constitutional rights to every citizen of the region… It is time to change the culture and direction of the Northeast Police,’ said Shah. .
He said that since there is peace in this area, now the citizens should pay attention to get their rights.
He said full implementation of the three new criminal laws in all provinces of the region is essential to achieve this change.
He was addressing the 72nd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) at Agartala, Tripura.
The minister asked all the governors present in the meeting to personally monitor the process, as it is important to instill confidence in the citizens in the Northeast that they can get justice by registering an FIR.
He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a campaign for a drug-free India, which has a special responsibility for the Northeast, as the main route for drugs to enter India passes through its states. Although significant work has been done in this direction in the last six years, the momentum is still not there.
He said connectivity in the region was no longer a problem, as the Center had spent ₹ 81,000 crore for rail connectivity and ₹ 41,000 crore for road network in northeastern states. He said that the northeastern region can be used well for palm oil cultivation.
Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Governors, Chief Ministers of all eight North Eastern states and senior officials were also present at the event.
The council is the nodal agency for the economic and social development of the North Eastern region comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
In another event of the day, Mr. Shah asked the country’s banks to formulate separate guidelines for the Northeast, saying that the development of the region is a national responsibility.
Addressing the Bankers’ Conclave, he said that banks should try to formulate proper policies so that the potential of the Northeast can be better explored.
