Vijayawada MP Kesineni Shivnath, during a debate in the Lok Sabha on Friday, urged the central government to include Anganwadi centers under Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
He said the scheme is a visionary initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched with an outlay of ₹ 75,021 crore to be implemented till FY 2026-27.
A key part of the plan was the saturation of government buildings with rooftop solar installations by 2025, reflecting a commitment to sustainable energy and cost efficiency.
In Andhra Pradesh, there were 55,607 Anganwadi centres, of which 8,455 did not have electricity connections. During summer, electricity supply is erratic, especially in rural areas, causing inconvenience to children in these centers. This adversely affects attendance and deprives children of essential care.
Extending the range of PM Surya Ghar to Anganwadi Centers along with other government buildings will ensure continuous power supply which will significantly improve the condition of children. In addition, the MP said it will help reduce government expenditure on electricity tariffs and provide long-term financial and energy sustainability.
