Aluva State Seed Farm, declared India’s first carbon-neutral farm by 2022, is ready with ‘green’ Christmas trees instead of plastic and other non-biodegradable materials.

The seed farm, which comes under the agriculture department and Ernakulam district panchayat, has come out with ‘live and green’ Christmas trees for the second time, said a communication from the assistant director of agriculture at the seed farm.

Natural Christmas trees—two-year-old Araucaria trees, a genus of evergreen conifers—are painted according to the theme. There are also other small trees that can go along with Christmas trees as decorations.

Christmas decorations and Christmas trees are meant to make the festivities more eco-friendly. The trees are available at Aluva Thuruth Seed Farm outlets for between ₹100 and ₹400.

Trees have also been provided at the Mujuris boat jetty outlet at the invitation of the Mujuris project.

Green Christmas Trees adds another chapter to the more than century-old seed farm, which was started as a demonstration and instruction farm. The 13-acre farm was declared an organic farm in 2012 and has since worked to achieve better environmental accountability.

When the farm was declared carbon neutral, the carbon emissions were 43 tons per year and the sequestration level was 170 tons.
