Members of the Legislative Council on Monday praised Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to the freedom struggle and how he led the entire nation in a non-violent fight against the British.
Participating in a special discussion to mark the centenary of Gandhi’s visit to Belagavi to attend the Congress session in 1924, the council members recalled the momentous occasion and said it was one of the milestones of the freedom struggle.
Setting the tone for the discussion, member BK Hariprasad elaborated on the significance of the Belagavi session of the Congress, citing historical events, including how Gandhi’s initial struggle against the British in South Africa paved the way for his participation here and how he led. Later struggle and made it a people’s movement.
Mr. Hariprasad listed the various movements Gandhi had led and talked about him taking off his clothes and starting the Swadeshi movement.
BJP’s CT Ravi spoke about how Gandhi’s participation gave the Congress a new direction and turned it into a mass movement. His comments about Savarkar, Ambedkar and Gandhi led to a heated debate which was dismissed by the Speaker of the House.
BJP’s Ravikumar presented several important details including the cost of the Congress convention, digging of wells in the premises, laying of pipelines, reception committee, invocation singers and passing of anti-touchability resolution. other diseases.

Bilkis Banu suggested establishing a residential institution in the name of Mahatma Gandhi and a women’s university on the occasion of the Women’s Centenary.
