Mysterious drone closes New York airport runway, governor says ‘it went too far’ | World News

Amid reported incidents of drone sightings in New York, runways at New York’s Stewart International Airport had to be temporarily closed Friday night after mysterious drones appeared, prompting a call for federal aid by Gov. Cathy Hochul.

New York’s Stuart International Airport, located 60 miles north of New York City, reported the incident and officials said the airport’s runway was closed for an hour after the country’s aviation regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), notified them. A drone was found in the area around 9:30 pm.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey released a statement after the runway closure, saying, “The closure has not affected flight operations.”

In a post on X, Governor Hochul said, “I will do whatever it takes to make sure New Yorkers stay safe. New York is investigating these incidents, but the federal government should give us the authority to deal directly with drones.

In a statement, Governor Hochul added that reported drone incidents “have gone too far”.

According to A NBC News In the report, the FAA said it temporarily slowed air traffic because there were reports that drones were seen near and above the airport. The FAA also said there were no safety issues with the airplanes.

According to White House, FBI and DHS officials, drone sightings reported in New Jersey and nearby states involve manned aircraft, and do not pose a national security threat.

“So far a combination of efforts … to include technical tools, tip line information and referred consultations … has found no evidence to support large-scale (unmanned aerial system) activities,” an FBI official said, as reported by the Associated Press.
