Madhuri Misal, a four-time MLA for Parvati in Pune, will be sworn in as a Maharashtra cabinet minister at a swearing-in ceremony in Nagpur on Sunday at 4 pm.
“I just got to know that my name is also on the list (of cabinet ministers in the newly formed grand coalition government). The swearing-in ceremony will be at 4 pm. Our government has always respected women… Whatever responsibility the party gives me, I will fulfill it,” Misal said. told ANI news agency in Nagpur.
Missal, who turned 60 this year, is a B.Com graduate. Before being elected as an MLA, she was a corporator from Pune’s Kasba Peth. She has been associated with BJP for the past 18 years. In the 2024 assembly elections, she defeated Ashwini Kadam of the NCP (SP) by more than 50,000 votes.
Excerpts from Misal’s interview with The Indian Express three weeks ago:
Q: This is your fourth consecutive victory in assembly elections. How do you like it?
Madhuri Example: I am grateful for the trust the voters have shown in me. I have worked for them for many years, first as a corporator and then as a legislator for three terms. The fact that they elected me by a large margin means that I have lived up to their expectations.
Question: What are the plans for Parvati region in the next five years?
Madhuri Example: Big infrastructure projects are going on in the constituency that I represent. I want to complete them as soon as possible and they include underground metro line from Swargate to Katraj, flyover at Gangadham and uninterrupted drinking water project. The channelization work of the river should be completed with retaining walls to prevent flooding in the adjacent areas during rainy season.
Q: You are the only woman MP representing the constituency in the Legislative Assembly. Is there any plan to address women’s problems?
Madhuri Example: Since I was elected by both men and women, I will work for everyone. I was on the legislative team for the Women’s Visa Committee. I am working to provide good public toilets for women in the city. It is very necessary. I want to make sure they are well maintained.
Question: Are you thinking of becoming a minister despite being a senior MP of the ruling political party?
Madhuri Example: Everyone has the ambition of development, I do too. However, that is the party’s decision. I will fulfill all the responsibilities assigned to me. I am the only woman MP who won four consecutive terms in the assembly. This is very important.
