In what is likely to be his last walk to the crease, Tim Southee hit three maximums against England at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Saturday, moving him into joint fourth place in the all-time Test six-hitting chart.
Coming in at number 10 in his farewell Test, Southee equaled West Indies legend Chris Gayle’s 98 sixes for the third most sixes in 23 10-ball cameos for the Kiwis. His third strike over the fence also moved him past Jacques Kallis on the all-time chart. Under the leadership of Ben Stokes, Southee came out for cheers and guard of honor from England. New Zealand scored 315 runs losing 9 wickets till stumps on the first day of the third and final Test.

The 36-year-old, playing his 107th Test, is on the cusp of the Test record with another innings likely in his career. Southee became the fourth batsman to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket after his former captain Brendon McCullum, Adam Gilchrist and Stokes. In all likelihood, Southee will become the fastest batsman to reach the century mark, boasting a six-wicket ratio at White.
Southee’s ball-to-six ratio stands at 27.65 per maximum delivery, the best among all batsmen with at least 50 sixes. For context, it took the mighty Gayle 11915 deliveries to reach a maximum of 98, a mark Southee achieved in just 2708 balls on Saturday!
