Lauding India’s progress since the constitution was enacted, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called it ‘extraordinary’, asserting that the country’s ancient democratic roots were an inspiration to the world.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha during a discussion on ’75 years of the glorious journey of India’s Constitution’, Prime Minister Modi said, “India is not only a great democracy, it is the mother of democracy.”

Stating that unity is the basis for fulfilling the dream of becoming a developed nation by 2047, the Prime Minister said, ‘The basis of our unity is our constitution.

Modi dismissed doubts about India’s democratic future and paid tribute to the constitution makers and citizens for supporting their vision. Citing the comments of eminent personalities like Purushottam Das Tandon and Bhim Rao Ambedkar, he said, those involved in the framing of the Constitution knew very well that India was not born in 1947 or became democratic in 1950.

He appreciated the role of women in the progress of India and said that the constitution gave them the right to vote and now the country is witnessing the development of women leadership.

He praised the parliamentarians for unanimously passing the law giving reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
