Manipur Police shot dead an armed man and arrested six others during an alleged counter-insurgency operation in Thoubal district on Saturday.
The incident took place at 9:45 am at Salungpham Manang Lekai under Hirok Police Station.
According to police sources, the armed men were traveling in a car and the police initially searched them on suspicion. However, after the group opened fire on the police, the police retaliated. One of the armed attackers was injured during the shootout. He was rushed to a hospital in Imphal but later died. The deceased is 18-year-old Laishram Prem from Thobal Khunau.
The police have seized three INSAS rifles, one .303 rifle, one SLR rifle and other weapons, electronic equipment and weapons.
Meanwhile, a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded in Borobekra of Jirivam district on Saturday afternoon. The incident took place around 3 km from Borobekra Police Station at 2.19 pm. No casualties were reported when the bomb exploded near an abandoned house.
