UP: Coach sentenced to 7 years in jail for raping minor player Lucknow News

A special court in Bareilly on Saturday sentenced an athletic trainer to seven years in jail for allegedly trying to rape a minor athlete in 2018.

The incident took place at a hotel in Nainital, where the athlete had gone to attend sports matches, as well as in Bareilly, the prosecution said.

Additional District and Public Prosecutor CP Gupta said that after the court convicted the accused Sahib Alam on Friday, he was taken into custody. Alam, who is now 50 years old, was released on bail during the hearing of the case.

On Saturday, the court sentenced Alam to seven years in prison, added Gupta.

During the hearing of the case, statements of five prosecution witnesses were taken. A 16-year-old girl and then a high school student testified against the accused.

According to the police, the girl’s father had lodged an FIR on 4 January 2018, alleging that his daughter had informed him of regular molestation by her coach, Sahib Alam. She also claimed that Alam tried to rape her in a hotel in Nainital during the monsoon marathon in 2017.

She managed to escape screaming for help, the father said in the FIR.

At first, the girl did not tell anyone about the incident. However, the accused continued to harass her and threatened to exclude her from district games if she did not comply with his demands,” the police said, quoting the FIR.
