Tongan Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni has resigned ahead of a no-confidence motion expected to be tabled in parliament later on Monday.
“In accordance with the constitution I will resign immediately,” Sovaleni told the Pacific nation’s parliament, according to a report on the Matangi Tonga news website citing the parliament’s office.
Reuters could not immediately reach Sovaleni’s office. Parliament’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Matangi Tonga said in his report that there was no discussion on the proposal in Parliament on Monday. Sovleni is set to call a media conference later on Monday, the news outlet said.
