The Rajya Sabha witnessed disruption and adjournment on Monday as lawmakers on the Treasury Bench demanded a discussion on alleged links between the Congress party and Hungarian-American billionaire philanthropist and investor George Soros.
As the House resumed proceedings on Monday morning, Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar said he had received 11 notices to raise cases under Rule 267, including one from NDA MPs, “to discuss the growing threats to national security due to alleged collusion between political parties and some. India v. Working Organizations Dhankhar rejected all notices and proceeded at zero hour.
However, the meeting was adjourned till noon after the treasury benches blocked the proceedings demanding discussion.
After the proceedings resumed, the Treasury Benches continued to demand deliberations. Leader of the House and Union Health Minister JP Nadda said members wanted to discuss recent reports of political parties’ links with “anti-Indian forces”. After Speaker Dhankhar called several ruling party MPs to speak, Congress MP Digvijay Singh asked him about the rule that allowed them to raise their case as notices under Rule 267 were rejected.
The speaker adjourned the meeting till 2 pm after the treasury bench continued the demand for discussion.
On Sunday, the BJP accused former Congress President Sonia Gandhi of being associated with the George Soros Foundation, which supported the idea of an independent Kashmir. The BJP has also accused Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, of working with the US’s “deep state” to tarnish India’s image, a charge the US has denied.
