Bhopal’s killer gas tragedy, which has already claimed nearly 2,000 lives, has taken a horrific turn. Six days after the leak from the Union Carbide plant, a fresh outbreak of cyanate poisoning has been reported from the affected area. While most victims were showing “delayed effects” of the deadly MIC, doctors also reported a few fresh cases, indicating long-term effects. Most of them were in serious condition.

Compensation to victims

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Arjun Singh has announced that the state government is determined to seek “adequate” compensation from the multinational Union Carbide Corporation for the victims of the gas accident. College students and teachers were expected to survey the damage in the worst-hit areas and submit a report to the District Collector.

A motorcycle was attacked

On December 8, four Manipur Rifles jawans were killed and seven others, including a Deputy Inspector General of Police (Hill Region), were injured when underground Naga rebels attacked Chief Minister Risang Keshing’s vehicle in Manipur’s Ukhrul district. The list of the underground National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN), however, survived.
