Police arrested a middle-aged man on Sunday on the charge of injuring a villager and trying to extort ransom on behalf of the rebels in Balramthakur Para of West Tripura district.
The arrested Shankar Devbarma was produced in the court on Monday.
According to the police, Shankar Debvarma allegedly assaulted Sushil Debvarma after he objected to him trying to collect money from local villagers for the rebel group.
Soon after the incident, Sushil Devbarma was taken to a local hospital and was later referred to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala. Shankar Debvarma was arrested and some weapons were seized from his residence after he lodged a complaint with the Jiraniya police.
“We started the investigation based on the FIR. When we reached the house of the accused to arrest him, we recovered a country-made gun and sharp weapons. We arrested him yesterday and produced him in court today (Monday),” said a police officer from Jiraniya police station.
