Diesel autorickshaws will be phased out in Gurgaon by the end of the year, the district administration said on Saturday. Although new diesel autorickshaws have not been registered in the district since 2023, the current autorickshaws will be seized by December 31.
In the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar referred to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) directive dated November 30, 2022, to completely phase out diesel autorickshaws by December 2026. It suggested registering only electric and CNG autorickshaws from January 2023. .
Kumar noted that various timelines have been set for phasing out diesel autorickshaws in NCR, in districts like Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar, with the deadline being December 31. Adjacent districts have until December 31, 2025.
He directed all sub-divisional officers, regional transport authority secretaries, and police officers to launch a drive by the end of this month to ensure compliance with CAQM orders. Kumar directed officials to monitor the passenger capacity of shared autorickshaws and immediately confiscate three-wheelers without registration numbers and driven by persons below 18 years of age.
According to Regional Transport Authority Secretary and SDM Ravindra Kumar, there are currently 38,400 autorickshaws of all fuels in the district, of which 1,150 run on diesel. Additionally, more than 80 diesel autos have already been seized as part of the ongoing removal process.
According to official records, Gurgaon has 77,000 daily commuters, along with around 16.49 lakh people who commute from the city to Faridabad, Noida and Delhi.
