Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala starrer Dil Se is a very popular movie But at the time of its release, it did not pull many audiences to the theatres. However, Mani Ratnam’s direction became a cult classic and fan favorite in the years that followed. The film’s dialogue writer and director Tigmanshu Dhulia did not run because the audience did not appreciate the climax of the film, in which the main character does not have a happy ending.
In a conversation with Lallantup Adda, Tigmanshu was asked about his reaction to the poor response of Dil Se. He shared, ‘I felt really bad when it didn’t work. Despite the amazing songs like ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ and ‘A Ajnabi’. In fact, my daughter’s name was inspired by a song. When the music was released, I was listening to those songs with her and my daughter was 2-3 months old then. My wife said let’s change her name from Shreyasi to Jhansi. In a way, Gulzar Sahab named my daughter.
He added, “I think people don’t want actors to die at the end, maybe that’s why it didn’t run in cinemas. I think the climax was disappointing for the audience. Because otherwise, the movie was moving beautifully.
Asked if there was any discussion to rework the climax as it was a popular trend in the 1970s-1980s, he said, “Mani Ratnam is an artist as a director, I learned a lot from him. be the director tho Mani Ratnam as is (The director should be like him). He believed in his work, it didn’t work, he didn’t care. Whether the film runs or not, he won’t change a single shot.”

Dil Se was set against the backdrop of rebellion in Assam. Manisha plays the role of a terrorist in the film. In an earlier interview with ANI, the actor talked about the ending of the film and said, “As an actor, for me, it was a great opportunity to explore the negative side of the character. I have always played charming and good roles, but this was different. It was not normal and I felt Like it. In the original script we agreed, because in the original version, he would let her die, but they changed it at the last minute.
He added, “In the last version, everyone was trying to get that her love was too intense for him, and at the same time he couldn’t allow her to go for it, nor allow him to live without her. He stops her but dies in it, They were trying to make it a big sacrifice, the original script didn’t have that. I just liked the original because there was no way they could be one. Sometimes an immature love is more interesting than a consummated love story.”
