A day after thousands of people thronged Mumbai’s Azad Maidan grounds to witness the grand swearing-in ceremony of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cleared 5,000,000 kg of garbage from the iconic grounds overnight on Friday. Drive.

For the past three days, under the pressure of more than 300 employees of the waste management department, the municipality has collected the waste from six vehicles till Friday morning.

According to police officials, around 35,000 to 40,000 people gathered at Azad Maidan, where Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar and former Shiv Sena CM Eknath Shinde were sworn in as deputy chief ministers.

In the state’s biggest swearing-in ceremony in recent years, not just the city, people from far-flung towns across Maharashtra gathered shoulder-to-shoulder with a bevy of Bollywood actors and industrialists.

As soon as the program was over, BMC employees working in the night shift went into action on Thursday night and cleaned 1000 kg of garbage in two small vehicles.

On Friday morning, four thousand kilos of waste was collected from Azad Maidan ground in a mini compactor vehicle along with three small vehicles.

“Collectively, more than 5,000 kg of waste was collected by the solid waste management staff after the event,” said a senior BMC official. The Indian Express.

Anticipating a huge crowd at the VVIP event, the BMC had already deployed more than 300 employees from its solid waste management (SWM) department on duty at Azad Maidan over the past three days.

“Our personnel were on duty day and night for three days. To oversee the arrangements, the municipal commissioner came twice for inspection while the additional municipal commissioner (city) also visited thrice on the eve of the VVIP event,” the official said.

The BMC also deployed five misting machines and six water tankers a day before the event to control dust on the ground.
