A 22-year-old man was arrested in Vadodara on Wednesday, a day after he jumped a red signal and tried to run over an assistant head traffic constable, officials said.

The man, identified as Arpit Patel, fled in a zoom after signaling the traffic police to pull the car over. Patel, a resident of Vemali of Sama village, has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving.

Inspector MB Rathod of Sama Police Station said, ‘The traffic constable suffered a fractured head and other injuries and has been admitted to SSG Hospital for treatment. We have also confiscated the sedan that the accused was driving during the incident.”

According to officials, the injured traffic constable Ajit Singh Udesin was on duty at the Abacus Circle intersection when Patel allegedly jumped the signal and drove his black sedan at full speed.

Patel’s sedan allegedly jumped the signal and Udesinh drove into the fast lane. Udesinh motioned for Patel to pull him aside. But, instead of obeying the instructions, Patel hit Udesinh who was standing in front of the car in the lane in an attempt to escape at high speed.

CCTV footage of the incident shows Patel trying to swerve around Udesinh and colliding with the police personnel. It is seen that Udesinh was thrown from the bonnet of the car.
